Examinations or Presentation Classes are fun days for you to show what you have been learning in your ballet classes. There are many different exams that you can do: Graded syllabus exams and when you are older Vocational Graded syllabus exams! If you don’t want to take an exam you can take part in something called a Presentation Class. The difference is you won’t get marked but you will get a certificate to show that you have taken part!

We have over 162 examiners who travel all over the world to see students in 54 countries taking RAD exams.

These are just some of our examiners who come and watch you each year! They travel from one country to the next to watch you and sometimes they can go to 4 countries, one after the other!

Your ballet teacher will let you know when you are ready to take an exam but in the mean time here is what happens on exam days all over the world!

On the day of your exam, you will arrive at the studio, which is often the same studio that you have your ballet classes in. Your teacher will often do your hair for you, so that it looks neat and tidy for your exam and won’t get in the way when your’re dancing!

Before you go into the exam you will have a coloured ribbon pinned onto your leotard. This will either be pink, blue, white or yellow. You wear a ribbon so that the examiner can tell you apart from your friends who will also be taking the exam with you.

When the examiner is ready to watch you perform for your exam, they will ring a bell. The examiner will be sitting behind a desk at the front of the room, as it is easier to watch everybody dancing!

You will then run into the studio and greet the examiner and you’re ready to start dancing! This is the fun part as you now get the chance to show the examiner everything that you’ve been learning in your ballet classes. Don’t worry though, you don’t have to remember the order of the exercises as the examiner will ask you what they would like to see.

At the end of your exam you will show the examiner your curtsey or bow and the examiner will thank you and say goodbye.

But what will happen on the day of your presentation class…

This time, when you arrive at the studio, your teacher will be waiting for you. He/she might do your hair for you, and check that you are looking neat and smart.

Instead of having a ribbon pinned on to your leotard, you will have a badge pinned onto you with a number on it between 1 and 8. This is so that the examiner knows who you are and doesn’t get confused when you are dancing!

Again, the examiner will ring a bell when they are ready to see you, and you will run into the studio and greet them. Your teacher will go with you into the studio, and he/she will take the class, just as they do when the examiner is not there. However this time will be different as the examiner has come to see you perform, and you have a chance to show them everything that you have learnt in the past few months, how exciting!

Now you’ve read what happens on an exam day, we would really like to hear from you about your exam day experiences! Just fill in the boxes below and the best comments each week will get shown on the site!
