About RADACADABRA
The Royal Academy of Dance created Radacadabra (a mixture of the words
'RAD' 'Academy' and 'Abracadabra') as a web site for children from
the ages of 5 - 10 who love dance. The rationale for creating a virtual
theatre was that we felt it was important to relate learning to dance
in a studio to the exciting, magical world of the theatre and the
performing arts. Theatres are colourful and sometimes mysterious places,
with a language, geography and customs all of their own, and this
seemed an ideal way to engage children's interest in dance in a stimulating
way.
From an educational perspective, there are many opportunities around the site for children to gain knowledge about dance and the theatre which will enrich and inform their experience as young dancers. In addition, in the process of navigating the site and taking part in the interactive sections, children are also learning and developing computer and information technology skills.
We hope, too, that sections such as the picture gallery, Ask Vanessa, the jokes, postcards and guestbook pages will encourage children worldwide to communicate with each other, and to enjoy being a part of the world's largest dance teaching organisation.
The future of RADACADABRA
What you now see on RADACADABRA, launched in June 2002, is only the beginning of what will soon grow into a much larger site. As the months go by, you will notice more items appearing on the submenus on the left of each main section, as new activities and pages are developed. If you are a dance teacher, tell your students about Radacadabra. Please encourage them to look around the site, submit questions, jokes or pictures and send postcards. We would also be delighted to hear from you if you have ideas for new pages - please submit them to postmaster@radacadabra.org .
